据外国媒体报道，由本尼迪克特-康伯巴奇主演的《奇异博士2》确认由山姆-雷米接手担任新导演。
山姆-雷米曾制作了《鬼玩人》恐怖系列，以及导演了托比马奎尔版《蜘蛛侠》三部曲。
早在一月份，由于创意上的差异，德里克森确认不再执导《奇异博士2》，转而担任执行制片的角色。今年二月，德里克森积极回应雷米接替他担任即将上映的电影导演的想法。“我和山姆-雷米一起工作过。他写道：‘他是我在电影界认识的最好的人之一，作为一名导演，他是一个真正的传奇人物’，接替奇博士是个多么好的选择啊。”
最初，《奇异博士》的续集计划在5月开始制作，目标是2021年5月上映。但由于担心传播冠状病毒，工作室暂时关闭，日期现在改为2021年11月5日。
