电影中，是枝裕和以学校中两位男孩发生的矛盾作为突破口，讲述了男孩之间的冲突辐射到了身边的成年人和整个社区并让媒体介入的故事，但随着小冲突演变为一个大事件后，两个男孩却失踪了，留给大家无数的遐想空间。
